Day of Procedure
What to Expect the Day of Your Outpatient Procedure
To prepare for your surgical procedure, you’ll be instructed to arrive two hours prior to your appointment. When you arrive, you’ll be escorted to the Outpatient Care Unit, where you’ll be given a gown to change into, and intravenous fluids (IV) will be administered. If not done earlier during pre-op, lab tests may be performed. A registered nurse will conduct a history and physical examination and take your vital signs.
A Board-certified anesthesiologist will greet you and obtain a more detailed history and physical, and answer any questions you may have. The anesthesiologist will remain with you during the entire procedure.
A surgical team — including your surgeon, anesthesiologist, a registered perioperative nurse, and a surgical technician — will be providing optimal care throughout your surgery.
Following the procedure, your anesthesiologist and the perioperative nurse will bring you to the post-anesthesia care unit, where you’ll be placed on monitors and cared for by a registered recovery room nurse. This acute recovery period will last about one hour. Then you’ll return to the outpatient clinical area, where a registered nurse will conduct further monitoring. Your support person may join you at this time.
Once you’ve safely recovered, you’ll be discharged. The staff will discuss the instructions you should follow, answer any questions or concerns you may have, and give you written instructions to take home with you.
We will monitor your progress with a follow-up phone call the day after your surgery to see how you are progressing and to answer any questions.
