Silva’s History
We are grateful to the Hayward Rotary Club for leading the efforts that created the Silva Pediatric Clinic. Rotary began raising funds for inoculations when it was discovered that over 40% of children in our community had not been fully immunized by the age of two.
It became apparent that more help was needed; many of these same children were not receiving regular preventive health care. So together with Alameda County Health Department, it was determined that the only way to make a real difference was to set up a full pediatric clinic in a high-need area.
Rotary stepped up its efforts. The organization integrated an innovative international fundraising plan into its domestic efforts, and received support from The Rotary of Taipei North. (This became the first non-U.S. based Rotary to donate funds to the United States.) Through this cooperation, the project became an effort of the entire community. The Silva Clinic, named for longtime Hayward resident and benefactor Angelina Fontes Silva, was established and seeing patients in only nine months.
In 1995, the Silva Pediatric Clinic at the Eden Youth Center opened, focusing on preventive health and providing children in need with primary and acute care in a compassionate and loving atmosphere.
Dental Clinic
The concept of including dental services at the Silva Pediatric Clinic was born from a dire need of pediatric dental care in our community. Lack of access for children with dental disease was the number one obstacle our physicians faced as they cared for patients at the Clinic.
Approximately 600 to 800 children at the Silva Pediatric Clinic were diagnosed with significant dental problems that required a referral to a dentist.
In 1999, with help from the community, our service expanded to provide dental care for children at the Silva Clinic. It remains an integral outreach program sponsored by the Silva Pediatric Clinic.
